Selflessly Selfish or Selfishly Selfless?

Possibly the most definable trait(s) of all human-beings: we’re all selfish and narcissistic, all to varying degrees, with varying intentions, and producing varying results. Me? Probably more selfish and narcissistic than I’ll ever admit; and of course, this is why I am naive enough to think that you trust me and that you even care to keep reading…

This innate, unchangeable nature, this false sense of “better, more deserving, and more important than everyone else,” will either endlessly lure us into a promising, yet never fulfilling life, or, if given our acceptance and permission, be used to flip the script, and allow us to live a life beyond our wildest imagination.

Possibly, yet paradoxically, by investing our time in causes greater than ourselves, that prioritize helping as many other people as possible first, we’re personally rewarded the most; we get the most selfish forms of self-gratification and self-fulfillment possible.

So the collective goal is this: to accept our innate selfishness, to redirect this unavoidable urge towards greater causes outside ourselves, knowing that it will not only comes back to us in more fulfilling ways, but will also lead to the most positive change in a world that needs it the most; and full-circle, provide us a world we are in need of the most ourselves.

Selfishly and Narcissistically Signed, Nate Helms.
